Prove me, O Lord, and try me; test my heart and my mind. For your steadfast love is before my eyes, and I walk in your faithfulness.
Psalm 26:2-3
We like to live a carefree life. We want to trust God, but we do not usually pray for Him to test and examine us. Going to Him in humble nakedness. We may not have huge scandalous sins like David’s with Bathsheba, yet every day we have small sins: harsh words, selfish thoughts, little white lies, hidden pride, and quiet compromises.
David’s prayer was brutally honest. He did not ask for comfort; he wanted God to test him fully. No masks. No excuses. No pretending he was better than he was. He wanted the Lord to look deep into his heart, mind, and soul.
God tests us like a metalsmith that refines gold in fire to burn off impurities, not to shame or destroy us, but to purify us. There is surprising grace in this; when we open our hearts to find His light, He will meet us with mercy, not shame. He forgives what we try to hide, and He gently shapes us into people who can walk with integrity. David could pray this way only because he trusted in God fully, His love, and His faithfulness to carry him through.
Lord, search me. Strip away all the layers and everything hidden. Examine my heart. Help me trust You enough to be fully known and fully loved. Are you willing to be fully known by God, without any filters or excuses? Where in your life have you been trusting God only when it was convenient?
The section of 2 Samuel was one of the darkest and most painful times of King David’s life. He had family sin and heartaches, which included rape, revenge murder, and his son Absalom’s rebellion, which led to his own death. David was forced to flee Jerusalem and faced betrayal by his close friends and family. He had deep grief and barely survived the civil war. David eventually won back the throne and tried to unite the northern and southern kingdoms. But new rebellions rose.
The psalms told David’s story through his own eyes. He prayed with raw, deep emotion, feeling fear, betrayal, guilt, and despair. Yet David never lost faith in God. He turned to him as his Rock, Refuge, and Shield. David confessed his sins, understood his consequences, yet found grace, mercy, and strength in God even at his lowest.
