My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as my priests; because you have ignored the law of your God, I also will ignore your children.
Hosea 4:6
God was not being harsh; He was heartbroken. His people were not wiped out just by enemies, but by ignorance of Him! Ignoring His ways, chasing idols, and treating faith like a checkbox (I showed up at church Sunday, check). Leaders failed to teach the truth, and the people stopped searching for it. Destruction was inevitable.
But there is grace. God calls us back. Knowledge of God is not just facts; it is a relationship, intimate and life-giving. Even in judgment, Hosea told of a God who heals and restores. A God who loves freely (Hosea 6:1-3).
Today, we must remember not to coast by, not to just check a box. We are to pursue God with a whole heart, our entire being, and putting in full effort. Real knowledge of God is knowing His truth, mercy, and justice. It is to trust in Him. Grace is for the humble person who seeks His will. Alignment with God starts with knowing Him deeply. “Do two walk together unless they have agreed to do so?” (Amos 3:3). We cannot walk with Him in wisdom without that knowledge.
Are you sometimes more focused on showing up for God (checking the box) than actually knowing Him deeply? What does “knowing God” look like in your daily life? Remember we must not just go through the motions.
This week we read from the book of Amos, where God revealed His plans and the warning, “Prepare to meet your God.” We also read the book of Hosea, where God showed His heartbroken but faithful love for the unfaithful people.
