Now, Lord our God, deliver us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone, Lord, are God.”
2 Kings 19:19

Deliverance to glorify God’s name. Hezekiah’s prayer as he looked to God for deliverance was not for himself but so that all the earth could know the Lord is God alone. This heartfelt plea came during the threats of Assyria. Hezekiah took Sennacherib’s mocking letters and spread them out before the Lord in the Temple. The king was not worried about himself or his own reputation. He wanted to live in order for Judah to be delivered for God’s own glory, for the world to see the One True God.

This is the heart of true grace. God delivers not because we deserve it, but for His own name’s sake. We must not live for ourselves, but for His name to be known! When we face challenges, how can you shift your prayers from self-focused relief to a desire that God’s glory would be revealed through the situation?

There was a huge contrast between King Ahaz’s unfaithfulness and his son Hezekiah’s trust in God. Hezekiah brought reform to the city by cleaning the Temple of idols, and even destroying the bronze serpent Moses made and restoring true worship. When the Assyrian king Sennacherib invaded Judah and conquered 46 cities, he mocked the God of Israel. Hezekiah humbly prayed in the Temple. God responded with deliverance through the angel of the Lord, who struck down the enemy army in one night. Psalms 48 and 76 celebrated the victory of God, the defender of Zion who made the enemies flee. God proved that He is the true King who protects and guides His people.
