But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way.
Daniel 1:8 

​Daniel was exiled and living far from home in a pagan palace. Everything around him said, “Eat the king’s food, just blend in, do not make waves.” But Daniel was different. He was faithfully following God and decided that he would not defile himself (Daniel 1:8). He chose to be true to God over comfort and living the easy life. This private decision was courageous and life-altering. God honored his obedience with favor, and Daniel’s influence grew.

​Grace often begins in quiet places, when no one is watching, and the easy path looks so inviting. Daniel refused the king’s table in order for his heart to stay free. The God who gave Daniel his strength also gives us the choice to say no to whatever pulls us away from Him. When we say yes to the Lord, that path keeps us clean before Him. We face these same choices every single day. What do we allow to define us? Is it the constant stream of television, movies, and social media scrolling? The extra glass of wine? Lusting after another?Laziness? The shows and voices you let shape how you think and feel?

We are called to ask ourselves what we are taking in that is slowly defiling our heart, mind, peace, and closeness with God. We do not have to be perfect; we just have to be willing to choose what keeps us clean before Him.

What “king’s food” are you taking in this week that looks harmless, and what would it look like to quietly say no so your heart stays clean before God?

Ezekiel 41–48 showed the future temple in detail, the Lord’s glory returning to fill it, a river of life flowing out to restore the land, and the unity of tribes settled around the rebuilt city. Daniel 1–12 followed Daniel, an exile who stayed faithful in a pagan palace while God rules over all kingdoms. Daniel prayed and learned that heaven heard him from the first uttered word. Even when the answers do not show right away, God is working on the wars behind the scenes.
