"Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.”
Esther 4:16
Esther’s secret was over. Mordecai had made it known that their family was Jewish. Esther would not be able to hide anymore. She and the rest of the Jewish people would be killed by Haman’s law. Going in front of the king uninvited was like a death sentence. The choice was not life or death. It was callous death versus death while making a stand for her people. Being in the palace would not save her when the other Jews died.
She ordered a fast: no food and no water, for three days and three nights for all Jews. Then Esther said her famous words, “If I perish, I perish.”
That is the moment that she stood up for herself, not by being brave and fearless, but by being unselfish. This is where grace came. The moment between two choices of death. She acted as a true Queen for her people, not those who crowned her, but those she was born into. God met her that day on her path.
Where have you been hiding that you belong to Christ in order to stay safe, and what would it look like to let that be known even if it costs you?
