Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?

Mark 8:37

Jesus was pushing forward the point, saying that once a soul was lost, there is nothing of equal value a person has to buy it back. The Greek word is “antallagma,” meaning equal exchange or ransom price.

Your soul (true life) is priceless and should be guarded because it is irreplaceable. No wealth, power, success, or even the whole world could compare in value to a lost soul.

Scripture talks about the cost in several places.

Psalm 49:7-8 "No one can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for them—the ransom for a life is costly, no payment is ever enough—"

Mark 10:45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

1 Peter 1:18-19 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.

In the end, the question was rhetorical. What can a man give…? The answer is nothing. Grace is the fact that we cannot give anything. Instead, God gives us Jesus, who paid the price, which was free to us. Our free gift is eternal life. Our soul cannot be bought because Christ paid the ransom that we cannot pay. All of it is a gift, received by faith. If something could be given, then it is no longer grace.

Today's discussion question:

What are you still trying to offer God in exchange for your soul, and what would it look like to stop bargaining and receive the ransom that has already been paid?
