Jesus looked at Jerusalem and said, “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.
Luke 13:34
Even when the city was rejecting Jesus, His heart was still reaching out. The longing to protect and gather them was not canceled by their refusal. That is grace: a love that keeps offering shelter even when it is turned away.
That same longing shows up time and time again in the extra parables that Luke gives us. The father runs to the son, the shepherd left the 99, the woman searched for the lost coin, the Samaritan stopped to help the wounded man, the master filled his banquet with outsiders, and the king entrusts minas to his servants. Luke’s parables keep illustrating the same heart Jesus reveals towards Jerusalem: A grace that keeps seeking, gathering, and welcoming even when people turn away.
