This observance will be for you like a sign on your hand and a reminder on your forehead that this law of the Lord is to be on your lips.
Exodus 13:9
God turned Moses into the ultimate Israelite leader. From the dramatic exit in Exodus, He gave Moses detailed instructions for the 10 Commandments, on how to live in a close relationship with God, set up the Passover festival (Feast of Unleavened Bread) as a remembrance that God brought them out in a hurry. In 13:9, we were introduced to phylacteries, which were little leather boxes that contained scripture and were tied to either the forehead or upper arm as a visible reminder to keep scripture in front of them- like following God’s laws front and center in their thoughts and actions. Ancient spiritual Post-it notes!
The reading continued with the Pillar of clouds and fire to guide, the feeding of the Israelites with manna and water, the 10 Commandments, more laws, and the building of the 1st traveling worship center, including the Golden Ark. Aaron was given fun clothes with gemstones, a robe with bells and pompoms, and even special underwear. All of this precision was divine to ask, can you follow God’s rules and instructions? God cares about each and every detail of our lives, He redeems, He guides, He instructs, He is holy, and He chose to live with His people.
Today's discussion question:
God redeems us, guides us, feeds us daily, speaks clearly, and says, “I want to live among you- but here’s exactly how.” He cares about every detail because He’s holy, and yet He chooses to dwell with imperfect people. It hits close to home. God still cares about the details of our lives, our words, our motives, the habits we keep, and the way we love. (Luckily, not about the dust in the house!)
Where is God asking you to trust Him in the small, specific details right now- and how are you responding?
