I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying His voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.
Deuteronomy 30:19-20
This verse is important because Moses made it clear that following God was a choice with real consequences, and that true life comes from loving God and listening to Him, not just following rules. This fits the heart of Deuteronomy, which reminds the Israelites that living in the Promised Land was not about land or success, but about staying close to God and walking faithfully with Him.
Deuteronomy chapters 16-34 review Israel’s festivals and warns against idolatry and false prophets. There are promises of blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience. This book recorded Moses’ farewell speech to the Israelites before he was allowed to view the Promised Land from Mount Nebo. God buried Moses himself, and Joshua was commissioned to be the next leader of Israel.
Joshua chapters 1 and 2 brought Joshua in front of God with a reminder to be “strong and courageous” while leading the Israelites into the Promised Land. Joshua sent out two spies, where the unlikely Rahab helped hide them from the king of Jericho’s men. She confessed her faith in the Lord, and through her faith, she and her family were saved. This marked the beginning of the conquests and how God extended mercy to those who trust in Him.
Today's discussion question:
Why is Rahab’s faith significant in the story of Joshua, and how does her role show that God uses unexpected people?
